Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a UK government initiative aimed at modernising the tax system by requiring businesses and individuals to maintain digital records and submit tax returns using MTD-compatible software. This transition enhances accuracy, efficiency, and transparency in tax reporting.
Key Dates:
April 2019: MTD for VAT became mandatory for VAT-registered businesses with taxable turnover above £85,000.
April 2022: MTD for VAT extended to all VAT-registered businesses, regardless of turnover.
6 April 2026: MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) will apply to self-employed individuals and landlords with annual business or property income over £50,000.
April 2027: MTD for ITSA expands to include those earning over £30,000 from self-employment or property.
April 2028: MTD for ITSA will be mandated for self-employed businesses and landlords with turnover above £20,000.
Partnerships: Implementation dates to be confirmed.
Under MTD for ITSA, affected individuals must submit quarterly updates of income and expenses, replacing the traditional annual return. This change aims to reduce errors and provide a clearer picture of tax obligations throughout the year.
